Instead of forcing him to chase his father’s dream, Anna encouraged Jordan not to make a permanent decision while he was still processing the loss. She asked him to continue playing for another season and then decide whether football was truly something he wanted.

Orbin Clarence Love Jr. was a longtime member of the Bakersfield Police Department.

He served the community for decades and rose to the rank of sergeant. Outside police work, Orbin was active in his church community, including roles as a Sunday school teacher and youth pastor.

His family was equally important to him.

Orbin’s obituary identified Anna and their four children, Kami, Emily, Jordan and Alexis, and reflected the strong connection he had with his family, church and colleagues. He was 51 when he died on July 13, 2013.

Orbin became involved in his son’s teams whenever possible. He volunteered as an assistant coach, warmed Jordan up before games and brought him along to play basketball with adult police officers. Jordan has described the two of them as almost inseparable during his childhood.
