Who Is Jamie Spatola?
Jamie Spatola was born Jamie Krzyzewski and is the youngest of Mike and Carol “Mickie” Krzyzewski’s three daughters.
Her older sisters are Debbie Savarino and Lindy Frasher. Basketball naturally surrounded Jamie from childhood because her father became Duke’s head men’s basketball coach in 1980 and eventually built one of the most successful careers in college basketball history.
Jamie did not simply remain on the sidelines of her father’s career, however.
She attended Duke University and graduated in 2004 with a degree in English and a minor in linguistics. She later earned an MBA from Cameron University in Oklahoma and a master’s degree in liberal studies from Duke.
Her professional life has included several very different roles. She has worked as a high school English teacher, an executive assistant at Cameron University, a basketball camp administrator and an author.
Jamie has also remained deeply involved in educational and community initiatives in Durham.
How Did Jamie and Chris Spatola Meet?
Jamie and Chris shared an unusual connection even before they married.
Chris had attended basketball camps connected with Duke when he was younger and eventually developed a relationship with Jamie. Their bond continued while he attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he played basketball.
Chris became a four-year starter for Army from 1998 through 2002. He later graduated with an English degree and served in the U.S. Army before entering coaching.

John David is the oldest. A Duke basketball media guide recorded his birth as November 10, 2009. Mackenzie arrived later, followed by the couple’s youngest daughter, Madeline.
Although Jamie grew up in one of college basketball’s most recognizable families and Chris spent years working in broadcasting, the couple generally avoided turning their children into public personalities.
That privacy became especially important following Chris’s death.
In its statement, the Krzyzewski family said its thoughts were particularly with Jamie and her three children and asked the public to give them space as they process the loss.

Her academic background in English and liberal studies eventually led to teaching and writing.
She co-authored leadership books with her father, including The Gold Standard: Building a World-Class Team. The book focused on lessons Mike Krzyzewski drew from coaching the United States men’s national basketball team and building a championship culture. Duke hosted Jamie and her father together for book events after its publication.
Jamie has also contributed to educational work in Durham.
She currently serves as vice chair of the Emily K Center, the nonprofit organization founded in honor of Mike Krzyzewski’s mother. The organization focuses on helping students pursue college and develop academically and personally.
Earlier professional profiles also noted Jamie’s involvement with Durham Academy and other community organizations.
Those experiences make education one of the strongest threads running through her career, even though basketball has always been close by.
Her Place in the Krzyzewski Family
Jamie is part of a family whose history at Duke stretches across generations.

Chris Spatola’s Career Before His Death

He was a successful Army basketball player, a military officer, a Duke coach and eventually a broadcaster.
At West Point, Chris became one of Army’s leading scorers and served as team captain during his senior season. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army for five years, including roles as a battery commander and executive officer.
He later joined Duke and worked under Mike Krzyzewski from 2007 to 2012.
Chris was also involved with USA Basketball while Krzyzewski coached the national team, contributing during the period that included Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008 and the 2010 World Championship.
After leaving coaching, he moved into sports media in 2012.
Chris became a familiar voice on ESPN college basketball broadcasts and also worked with SiriusXM. ESPN remembered him as someone whose perspective combined the experiences of being a student-athlete, soldier, coach and broadcaster.

Chris’s sudden death has placed Jamie and their children in an extremely difficult new chapter.
Public details about the circumstances remain limited. Duke confirmed his death at 47, but no cause had been announced as of September 23, 2026.
The family’s statement focused instead on the person Chris was to those closest to him.
They remembered his military service, his devotion as a husband and father, and the important place he held within the Krzyzewski family. They also expressed gratitude for the messages of support while asking that Jamie, John David, Mackenzie and Madeline be allowed to grieve privately.
