She also earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition three times, showing that her college experience included considerable work away from basketball as well.

After her playing career, Annie moved into coaching. She worked as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Cleveland State, giving her a professional connection to athletics even as Joe was beginning his NFL career nearby with the Browns.

That shared understanding of competitive sports appears to have been useful throughout their marriage. Annie knew firsthand what training schedules, injuries, preparation and team expectations could demand from an athlete.

Their friendship eventually developed into a relationship as both continued competing for Wisconsin.

The timing was anything but relaxed.

Cleveland had selected Joe third overall in the NFL Draft only a few months earlier. Their wedding came shortly before Joe needed to move to Cleveland and begin preparing for his rookie season.

The couple chose July 7 because it worked with his football schedule, rather than because of any special attachment to the 7/7/07 date. About 350 guests attended their wedding.

Joe and Annie had little time for a long period of newlywed calm afterward. They were soon relocating as professional football took over their schedule.

Their life after football also created opportunities to enjoy activities they could not always prioritize during an NFL season.

Joe has spoken about hiking with Annie and their children. In 2023, he and Annie completed the 26-mile Inca Trail to Machu Picchu together.

Joe later reflected that the demanding trip reminded them of something about both marriage and team sports. Going through difficult experiences together can deepen trust and appreciation in ways ordinary routines sometimes cannot.

After 16 years of marriage at the time, both considered the experience one of the best things they had done together outside becoming parents.

The Thomas family has continued appearing around football even after Joe’s retirement.

In 2025, Joe returned to an NFL Draft stage in Wisconsin to announce Cleveland’s second-round selections. His son Jack joined him for one of the picks, creating another Browns moment shared between father and son.
