Who Was Wicknell Chivayo Wife? Inside His Marriage to Lucy Muteke

Who Was Wicknell Chivayo Wife? Inside His Marriage to Lucy Muteke

Lucy “Lulu” Muteke became widely known as the wife of Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo, but she generally lived a much quieter life than her husband.

Chivayo was a highly visible figure in Zimbabwe, known for his business interests, lavish lifestyle and frequent appearances on social media. Lucy, by comparison, kept much of her personal life away from public attention.

The couple married in March 2025, beginning a new chapter after Chivayo’s separation from his former partner, Sonja Louise Madzikanda.

Their marriage, however, was tragically short-lived. On September 30, 2026, Wicknell Chivayo and Lucy Muteke were among six people killed when a helicopter crashed in the Marondera area of Zimbabwe.

Their deaths have since led to widespread mourning, while their families have been preparing for a joint funeral in Harare.

Lucy Muteke Was Chivayo’s Wife

Lucy Muteke was also known affectionately as Lulu, and she became Chivayo’s wife following their marriage in March 2025.

Their relationship attracted attention partly because of Chivayo’s public profile. He was already one of Zimbabwe’s most recognisable businessmen, and his personal life often received media coverage.

Lucy was different.

She largely stayed away from the spotlight and did not build the same public persona around the relationship. Much of what became known about her came through her connection with Chivayo and their marriage.

The couple’s wedding marked an important moment in Chivayo’s personal life after the end of his previous relationship.

Their Marriage Came After a Difficult Previous Chapter

Before Lucy, Chivayo had been involved with Sonja Louise Madzikanda.

The pair married in 2017 and had two children together, John Chenjera and a daughter named Atarah Minana. Their relationship eventually broke down, with their separation becoming the subject of considerable public attention and legal disputes.

By 2024, their relationship had effectively come to an end, although issues involving their children and finances continued to make headlines.

Chivayo later began a relationship with Lucy, and their marriage followed in March 2025.

That made Lucy the woman who shared the final chapter of Chivayo’s life.

Lucy Kept a Lower Public Profile

One of the most notable things about Lucy Muteke was how little she appeared to seek publicity.

Chivayo regularly shared aspects of his lifestyle publicly, including expensive purchases, business activities, travels and interactions with well-known personalities.

Lucy was much more private.

That difference made her an interesting figure to people searching for information about the couple. While Chivayo was frequently in the news, Lucy’s life away from her husband remained comparatively difficult to document.

She was known primarily as Lulu, Chivayo’s wife, rather than as a celebrity or public personality in her own right.

The Couple’s Marriage Was Cut Short

Lucy and Wicknell had been married for roughly a year and a half when tragedy struck.

On September 30, 2026, the couple were travelling by helicopter when the aircraft crashed near Kudenga Farm in the Marondera area.

All six people aboard were killed.

The victims included Chivayo and Lucy, as well as two pilots and a security aide. Authorities began forensic procedures and DNA identification following the crash.

The accident caused a major fire, making the recovery and identification process particularly difficult.

The news of Chivayo’s death quickly spread across Zimbabwe and beyond, with tributes coming from people who knew him through business, politics, sport and social circles.

For Lucy’s family, the tragedy also meant losing a woman who had largely lived outside the intense public attention surrounding her husband.

The Family Chose Not to Have a Body Viewing

The circumstances surrounding the crash have also affected the funeral arrangements.

Chivayo’s family spokesperson, his uncle Herbert Chivayo, confirmed that there would be no viewing of the bodies of Wicknell and Lucy before burial.

The decision was made because of the condition of the remains following the helicopter crash.

For the families, this has added another painful element to an already devastating loss.

Forensic examinations and identification procedures were required before final arrangements could be completed. The family has since confirmed plans for the couple’s burial in Harare.

Lucy and Wicknell Will Be Buried Together

The couple are scheduled to be buried on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at Glen Forest Cemetery in Harare.

Their funeral is expected to draw family members, friends, associates and members of the public who want to pay their respects.

The family has clarified that the burial will not be restricted to a small private gathering. People will be able to attend and honour the couple.

The decision gives members of the public an opportunity to say goodbye to a businessman who was a highly visible figure in Zimbabwe, while also remembering Lucy, who spent much of her life away from the media spotlight.

Chivayo’s Children Remain Part of His Legacy

Following Chivayo’s death, questions naturally emerged about his family and what would happen to his considerable estate.

According to his uncle Herbert, Chivayo had expressed a wish that his children should receive most of his wealth.

The family has said it intends to honour that wish.

This is particularly significant because Chivayo had two children from his earlier relationship with Sonja Madzikanda. Their family history had already involved disputes surrounding finances, maintenance and other legal matters.

His death therefore leaves behind not only a grieving family but also children whose future will now be closely connected to the estate he accumulated during his lifetime.

Lucy’s Story Is Different From Her Husband’s

It can be easy to focus entirely on Wicknell Chivayo when discussing the tragedy because of how famous and controversial he was.

Lucy Muteke’s story is different.

She was not known for the same public displays of wealth or political connections. Instead, she remained relatively private while becoming Chivayo’s wife in 2025.

Her sudden death has therefore introduced many people to her name through the saddest possible circumstances.

There is still limited publicly available information about her personal background, career and life before her marriage. That privacy was part of her identity, and it is important not to fill those gaps with assumptions.

What is known is that she shared the final period of Chivayo’s life and that the couple’s marriage lasted only a short time before the fatal crash.

A Marriage Remembered After Tragedy

The relationship between Lucy Muteke and Wicknell Chivayo was brief compared with many long marriages, but it became an important part of both their lives.

They married in March 2025 after Chivayo’s previous relationship had ended. For Lucy, it meant stepping into the life of one of Zimbabwe’s most recognisable businessmen while still maintaining a relatively private presence herself.

Just over a year later, their story ended in an unimaginable tragedy.

Their joint burial at Glen Forest Cemetery will bring together relatives, friends and members of the public as they remember the couple.

For those closest to Lucy, however, she will be remembered for more than being Wicknell Chivayo’s wife.

She was a daughter, relative, friend and wife whose life was cut unexpectedly short.

The circumstances of her death have understandably dominated the headlines, but the family’s decision to give Lucy and Wicknell a shared final resting place reflects the life they built together during their marriage.

As Zimbabwe continues to mourn the helicopter crash victims, Lucy Muteke’s name will remain connected to one of the country’s most talked-about tragedies of 2026, while her quieter personal story continues to stand alongside the much more public legacy of her late husband.
